According to the Times Higher Education (THE) Rankings the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore has been listed in the world’s 100 most reputed universities. It is the only Indian academic institution in the list.

The THE Rankings, which are reputation-based, found Harvard at the top, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Cambridge and the University of California, Berkeley.

The Chinese universities Tsinghua University and Peking University also appeared on the list.

The reason THE rankings are extremely significant for India is that these are far better than performance-based rankings of Indian institutions in recent years. Indian institutes see this as a ray of hope because it suggests that although the IISc and other top institutions need to improve performance, marketing that performance may have been taken care of already.
