Film making is a craft. There are numerous lines of business that can lead to fame and glory in the film industry. It is possibly the most attractive industry besides music and fashion. The iconic status that is bestowed on some very talented individuals drives thousands of aspirants to enter this remarkable and exciting industry, but it is also the most complex and competitive industry.
Film making involves a collaboration of various talents such as screenplay writing, direction, editing, lighting, set design, photography, acting, cinematography, etc, and each of these are intrinsic part of the process. It may take you years to make a niche for yourself in the film world. But with the right training, you might be able to reduce the time gap between a start-up career and success.
In India, to begin studying film making at any of the schools the minimum requirement is 10+2. Many institutes conduct entrance exams too. The courses for technical streams such as lighting and sound require a science graduate with preferably a major in physics. You can study at institutes like Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute in Kolkata, the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, or join a film making program abroad.
Evaluate the institute on the basis of courses it offers. A couple of things to check are: studio and lab facilities, the availability of on-field assignments, and faculty. Staff that is still actively involved in film making will be an added advantage.
