When 100% marks are still not enough
21
Admission season is on and yet, even students with 95% marks are also not able to find their dream course. Recently announced cut off lists from some of the illustrious colleges of Delhi University has surprised one and all. SRCC’s first list was 100% cut off for non-commerce students; Hindu’s cut off list is at 99% and Lady Sri Ram College has announced cut off at 97%.
Education experts say that this is not unexpected; it was bound to happen sooner or later. The number of students with 90% has risen to 22,000 this year, whereas last year it was around 17,000. The inability to qualify for an undergraduate degree program even with 90 % or 95 % marks can be very discouraging.
Delhi University is not the only one. The competition to get into IITs and IIMs is growing tougher with each passing year. Blame it on the exponential increase in the number of students or on the stagnant nature of education institutions, but the result is the same. The bottom line is that imbalance in the Indian higher education system has grown noticeably and is affecting students adversely.
The major drawback of such high cut offs is that students are opting to study abroad. Infact, this trend has gained momentum in the past couple of years. Students who are financially sound prefer to go abroad to study, especially in countries like Canada, the US, and Australia as they offer international degrees at comparative costs and with better job prospects.
