Economic growth is linked to educated manpower
24
To maintain the growth curve, India needs to invest enormously into higher education. Despite registering an economic growth rate of 8%, India’s GER, the gross enrolment ratio is 14 which is much less as compared to the global average of 23. Hence, India has to immediately improve the quality and quantity of educational institutions.
Three major factors that have resulted in chaos in the Indian higher education sector are:
1. A shortage of qualified faculty. For example: As much as 75% posts have been reported to be vacant in the engineering colleges of Gujarat.
2. There is big disparity in colleges versus population. Southern and Western India with one thirds population has 80% medical colleges whereas, Northern, Central and Eastern parts have only 20% of medical colleges with two thirds of the Indian population residing there. This skew in the numbers has forced a large number of students to migrate out of their home states to study and has resulted in burdening the resources of the receiving state.
3. The lack of quality government or private institutions. India needs 1500 universities in the next four years to fulfill the educational goals of its growing population. At present there are only 350 universities out of which only a handful offer quality education.
Higher education institutions must provide a sustainable educational environment to provide skilled manpower to national and international organizations.
