The estimated faculty shortage at present in colleges is around three lakh. The report, which was made after widespread consultations with several vice-chancellors and other sections of academics, was submitted to HRD Minister Kapil Sibal.
“The task force takes note that more than 300,000 is the shortage of faculty in the system at present,” an official statement from the HRD ministry said.
A scheme was also recommended to induct young men and women in teaching while they are still pursuing their academics and higher remuneration for the teachers pursuing research with teaching. This is part of the government’s efforts to overhaul the education system.
