What with the global economic downturn, especially evident in the US and Europe, shadowing the job market worldwide, any amount of soothsaying on the prospects of an uptrend job market seems untrue and difficult to consume.

Two IT giants and 5,000 odd jobgetters would beg to differ. Yes, amidst the general gloom in economies worldwide, TCS and Cognizant have set trends in recruitment that make all speculators and market watchers sit up and take notice.

According to educational consultant, Jayaprakash Gandhi there is a point to be noted here.

He feels the prospect is very good, citing that even in the 2008 recession 18% growth was seen in IT companies and as of now the growth rate is 40%.
TCS has recruited more students this year than it did in 2010 from Sastra and SRM Universities. S. Vaidhyasubramaniam, dean of planning and development at Sastra University, feels that the mood is upbeat and reassuring and that things will recover in the long term.

Shankar Srinivasan, chief peoples officer, Cognizant, is talking of this year being ‘a historical yield year for the company’. These intake figures speak for themselves:  340 from the Sri Venkateswara College; 464 from the Birla Institute of Technology; 410 from Chaitanya Bharati, Hyderabad; 294 from Institute of Technology, BHU, Varanasi; and 234 from the Institute of Engineering and Management, Kolkata.

The VIT University chancellor, G. Viswanathan, is in double upbeat mood as he observes that companies are growing and reinventing themselves. VIT’s recruitment record of 1,643 students in 2010, the single largest by any one company, is likely to be broken this year.
