Located in a five-acre campus in Siruseri, Chennai, the Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) was founded in 1989. Granted the status of a university in 2006, the CMI offers undergraduate as well as postgraduate programs in physics, mathematics, and computer science. Its key strength though us in high-end research in mathematics.
The courses they offer are,
• BSc (Hons.) Mathematics and Computer Science (3-year integrated course)
• BSc (Hons.) Physics (3-year course)
• MSc Mathematics
• MSc Applications of Mathematics
• MSc Computer Science
• PhD Mathematics
• PhD Computer Science
• PhD Physics
Admission
An entrance test will be held at centers throughout the country in the fourth week of May to select candidates for the various courses. An advertisement announcing the test will appear around the end of February or the beginning of March. Results will be declared by the end of June.
The application form may be obtained online or in person. In addition, applicants for all PhD programs, as well as the MSc programs in Mathematics and Applications of Mathematics, will have to attend an interview in Chennai.
All students receive scholarships that meet all expenses:
• BSc (Hons.) — Rs. 4,000 per month,
• MSc — Rs. 5,000 per month,
• PhD — Rs. 16,000 or more per month.
Students of BSc (Hons.) also receive an additional monthly scholarship of Rs. 1,000, made possible through generous private donations. For more information, write to admissions@cmi.ac.in.
Research
In mathematics, research activity has been taking place mainly in the following areas:
• algebraic geometry,
• representation theory,
• operator theory,
• commutative algebra,
• harmonic analysis,
• control theory
• game theory.
Research work includes stratification of binary forms in representation theory, the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck Compactfication in algebraic geometry, stochastic games, and inductive algebras of harmonic analysis.
Internships
From May through July, CMI accepts students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, as interns in mathematics or computer science. The students are expected to stay throughout the duration of the program.
The period of internship in Computer Science ranges from a minimum of one month to a semester. Students should have a background in programming, and preferably some exposure to algorithms and/or automata theory.
CMI does not usually offer internships to students before the end of their second year of college/university. Those interested can apply directly by email: csinternships@cmi.ac.in
Around early March applications for all programs starting in August will open. Look out for the exact dates for the opening and closing of applications at www.cmi.ac.in.
