Underemployed Engineers
K. Senthilkumar is an ATM supervisor for a nationalized bank; among his coworkers he is an important man because they value his work of loading and offloading cash at five ATM centers — all this for a monthly salary of Rs. 6,000. However, only few of his colleagues know that he is a qualified computer science engineer with an aggregate of 62 percent. “I graduated in ECE in 2008. I had just about 45 percent in class 12 which barred me from the interview process of the three companies that came to my college,” he says. Despite trying for three years Senthilkumar has not been able to find an engineering job. “Underemployment is any day better than unemployment,” he adds.

The Farm Sector Takes on a Sheen
The Information Technology sector has enjoyed and continues to enjoy an exclusive place of importance in the job market. Engineering Colleges in Kerala: Are We Spoilt for Choice?
Choosing the right institution for higher education can be a daunting task even if one is exploring colleges within a state. In Kerala, for instance, in the last 10 years engineering colleges have proliferated so rapidly that their number today stands close to 125. The number of seats has more than quadrupled since 1999. This has thrown open enormous opportunities to the student community. But at the same time it has made the process of making the right and informed choice rather difficult. ONLY CAT SCORES FOR IITs MANAGEMENT COURSES
Those aspiring to a management course in IIT will now need to appear for only one entrance exam (CAT) as the IITs are all set to do away with the JMET (Joint Management Entrance Test). Although IITs have been accepting both JMET and CAT scores, students usually appeared for both the tests. Since the structure and content of the two examinations are the same, IITs have planned to use only the CAT scores for the admission process. This will, hopefully, ease pressure on the students. However, it may not be possible for all management courses to opt for this process.
