Anthropology
Anthropology is a social science that studies the origins and social relationships of human beings. Anthropologists study the language, traditions, beliefs, possessions, and values of people in various parts of the world and formulate hypotheses to explain their research and findings. They generally specialize in physical anthropology, archaeology, linguistics, or cultural anthropology. Physical anthropologists attempt to understand the physical or biological development of the human species. Archaeologists examine physical objects such as tools, clothing, homes, and art left from past human cultures. Linguistic anthropologists study the evolution of languages and their relation to one another, while cultural anthropologists study the customs and cultures of living people. Social problems such as birth control, labor unrest, juvenile delinquency, mortality rate can be dealt with using information gathered from anthropological studies.
Courses and Eligibility:
The minimum qualification for a bachelor’s programme in anthropology is a 10+2 pass certificate in any stream. Candidates who have completed their graduation can pursue a master’s programme; they can in turn opt for further studies by applying for MPhil and PhD programmes. A PhD degree is imperative for a candidate who wishes to join an international development agency as an advisor.
Career Prospects:
Most anthropologists work in colleges and universities, where they teach and engage in research. Government agencies employ anthropologists usually in museums, national parks, and technical aid programs. International agencies such as WHO, UNESCO, and UNICEF also recruit several anthropologists to conduct research activities. These professionals may also be employed as curators, linguists, and social workers in media houses, publishing houses, and NGOs. Anthropologists also find employment in forensic science and criminal investigation departments. They are sometimes deployed at archaeological sites to supervise research teams.
Remuneration:
Graduates employed in public research institutions and departments receive payments as per the terms and conditions of the government. Candidates involved with international developmental agencies enjoy higher remuneration, perks, and other benefits. Professors and teachers in academic institutions may receive around Rs.10,000–Rs.25,000, according to their level of experience.
