Libraries are arsenals of knowledge, information, and entertainment. Proliferation of learning institutes and intensification of research activities have made librarianship attain the status of a separate discipline in the universe of knowledge. Librarianship as a profession is concerned with storage, organizing, and maintenance of books, papers, journals, and new tools of information such as CD-ROM, internet, virtual libraries etc. Continuing education is an important aspect of this profession. Job opportunities for librarians are on the upswing.

Students who have passed 10+2 examination in any stream will be eligible to pursue a BA or BSc programme in Library Science. Candidates who have completed their graduation can pursue a master’s programme; they can in turn opt for further studies by applying for MPhil and PhD programmes. One can also opt for a diploma or a certificate course after completing class X.
Career Prospects:
Graduates can find employment opportunities in places such as public/government libraries, universities and other academic institutions, news agencies and organizations, private organizations and special libraries, foreign embassies, photo/film libraries, information/documentation centers. Some library technicians are employed on short-term contracts as researchers, consultants, or cataloguers. Librarians in entry-level positions are mostly assigned circulation desk duties.
With experience, they can take on more responsibilities such as verifying and storing information, acquiring new library materials, and making decisions related to budgets. Some librarians go on to become supervisors and may even have the charge of the day-to-day operation of an entire library.
Remuneration:
Salaries of a librarian vary depending upon individual qualifications, experience, size, and nature of the hiring institutes. Librarians employed in government museums, archives, and galleries have higher earnings than those in colleges and universities. Librarians working in private documentation centers and research institutes also enjoy a handsome pay. Average earnings of librarians is around Rs. 10,000–Rs. 15,000.
