Psychology
Psychology can be broadly defined as the study of mental processes and behavior. Psychology is a broad field with several areas of specialization. Experimental psychologists carry out research projects to develop theories about learning, motivation, and other aspects of behavior. Developmental psychologists study the growth and changes that take place throughout life. The largest group is made up of clinical psychologists, who often provide individual, family, or group psychotherapy for people with emotional problems. Other specialties include educational psychology, comparative psychology, social psychology, and psychometrics, among others. With modern lifestyles influencing individual and group behaviors and thus sometimes eroding mental wellbeing, there is a growing demand for psychological councilors across the globe.
Courses and Eligibility:
An aspirant must have a bachelor’s degree in psychology or a related discipline to step into the field. Those who want to work as school psychologists must earn specialist degrees, which require three years of graduate study and a one-year internship. A master’s degree may be sufficient in some areas. Clinical or counseling psychologists in private practice and those in teaching and research positions usually need doctorates, which require at least five to seven years of graduate study.
The minimum qualification for a bachelor’s programme in psychology is a 10+2 pass certificate in any stream. Candidates who have completed their graduation can pursue a master’s programme; they can in turn opt for further studies by applying for MPhil and PhD programmes.
Career Prospects:
Graduates can be employed in schools and colleges as counselors, particularly those who have specialization in educational psychology. There is a huge demand for clinical psychologists in hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes. Various rehabilitation centers, prisons, child/youth guidance centers, and NGOs are recruiting psychologists for counseling and the rehabilitation of mentally retarded and old-aged people, victims of violence and war, drugs addicts, and others with mental disorders. Companies employ psychologists to design and analyze surveys and to help employees with personal problems. Experienced psychologists can expand their private practices or move into high-level jobs in research, teaching, counseling, or administration.
Remuneration:
Psychologists at the start of their career can earn a monthly salary of Rs. 5,000 to Rs.8,000. Remuneration solely depends upon qualification, specialization, and experience. Psychologists in schools, colleges and NGOs can easily get Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 10,000 per month. In the private sector, the pay package is usually higher. Teaching is quite profitable in this field. Psychologists involved in private practice and having good professional reputation can earn handsomely.
