Stockbrokers are professionals who are involved in buying and selling of securities for individuals or corporations in stock markets. They manage all their clients’ investments and buy and sell investments without consulting clients. They work as part of a team alongside investment analysts who carry out penetrative research into how companies in the marketplace are performing and then make decisions accordingly. Courses and Eligibility:
A graduate in economics or commerce can pursue the profession of a broker. MBA graduates in finance can also aspire to be a stockbroker. To attain membership of a stock exchange, one has to go through a training under a broking firm for a minimum period of 6 months. The training aims to impart knowledge of subjects such as accountancy, law, capital markets, securities and portfolio analysis, etc. For the bachelor’s programme the basic eligibility criteria for a candidate is a 10+2 certificate in any stream.
Career Prospects:
Stockbrokers can be employed in various organizations such as mutual fund companies, investment consultancies, broker firms, insurance companies, merchant banks, pension fund managers, and other financial institutions. After gaining some experience, they can also start their own consultancies. Liberalization and globalization of the world economy have put stock broking and stock trading at the very center of all investment-related activities. Initiatives taken by SEBI to discipline, reform, and bring greater transparency in the markets have had positive effects on the economy in general. Foreign institutional investors, mutual fund managers, and even individuals have once again started posing confidence in the capital markets. This has enhanced prospects for brokers, investors, and equity analysts.
Remuneration:
The remuneration of a stockbroker solely depends upon the individual’s experience and the nature of the clients served.
