Computer Science

Computer science is the study of computers, both hardware and software. It is composed of many broad disciplines, including artificial intelligence. The coursework mainly deals with the development of computer applications for updating computer program languages. It also aims at creating better tools for faster and advanced applications. There are a good number of colleges and universities in India offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses in computer science and its application. The trend is further rising owing to the rapid growth of IT and software industries in the country. A career in computer science has always been very rewarding.

Courses and Eligibility:

Courses offered at the undergraduate level are BSc or BCA. The eligibility requirement for admissions in these courses is a 10+2 certificate in science stream with physics, chemistry, and mathematics as the core subjects. Those who complete their bachelor’s degree can go ahead and pursue MSc or MCA in computers. For the MCA program, entrance exams are conducted by different universities/institutes. Please note that MCA and MSc in computers are equivalent degrees as recognized by the UGC, as are BCA and BSc in computers at the undergraduate level.

Career Prospects:

The demand for trained professionals has increased considerably owing to the proliferation of software and IT companies in India. Graduates are inducted in IT and computer-based companies as software engineers, programmers, internet experts, network designers, software developers, system analyzers, and trouble-shooters. Some of the many organizations that recruit computer professionals in India are D.E. Shaw, HCL Technologies, IBM, Microsoft, ORACLE, Polaris, Sonata Software, TCS, Texas Instruments, Wipro Systems. Those who have a liking towards teaching can opt for a profession in that field.

Remuneration:

In India, a fresh graduate can expect a starting salary of Rs.10,000–Rs.25,000 per month . A few years of industrial experience may shoot up the salary to Rs. 50,000 per month. MCAs from reputed universities/colleges are offered up to 10 lakhs per annum or more.
