Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical Engineering is the study of engineering principles and techniques that are applied in the medical field to develop new procedures or to conduct research required to solve clinical problems. Artificial replacements for organs, pacemakers, and surgical devices (such as magnetic resonance imaging machine and laser systems for eyes) are some of the innovations of this branch of engineering. The course is designed in such a way that a student can build a career in the biomedical world using influences from others streams such as biotechnology and biomechanics, which are fairly new in India. The field has gathered considerable momentum in the past decade and with the advent of sophisticated medical technologies, career opportunities are bound to grow rapidly.
Courses and Eligibility:
The various courses offered in Biomedical Engineering include:
- BE Biomedical Engineering
- BTech Biological Sciences and Bioengineering
- BTech Biomedical Engineering
- BTech Biomedical Instrumentation
- ME Biomedical Engineering
- MTech Bio Engineering
- MTech Biological Sciences and Bioengineering
- MTech Biomedical Engineering
- MTech Biomedical Instrumentation
The eligibility criterion for admission to a course in BE/BTech in Biomedical Engineering is a 10+2 pass in the Science stream with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as the core subjects. The duration of these courses is 4 years. To get enrolled in any of the 2-year MTech programs one has to complete successfully the BE/BTech course.
Career Prospects:
A Biomedical graduate can find jobs in hospitals, medical equipment manufacturing units, educational and medical institutions, pharmaceutical companies, government regulatory agencies, and health care organizations. Huge opportunities are available in the field of research and development in universities, government agencies of India, and international labs in foreign countries. The course also offers various government jobs in microbiology as well as biomedical departments across the country.
Remuneration:
A fresher can start earning Rs. 10,000–15,000 per month in hospitals and health care centers. Those involved in research and teaching may receive Rs. 15,000–20,000 per month. Professionals working in medical and manufacturing units are bound to get a higher salary. The starting salary in government sectors is around Rs. 20,000 per month and increases with experience.
