The eligibility criterion for admissions to BE/BTech courses is a 10+2 pass in the Science stream with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as core subjects. The 2-year MTech course can be pursued after successfully completing an undergraduate course. One can also take up a diploma/certificate course in Civil Engineering after completing class 10. Students need to go through entrance exams such as GATE for admissions to BTech and MTech courses.
Career Prospects:
According to an estimate, over 50,000 new jobs in the civil engineering sector are coming up every year across the country in the private sector. The Government of India has announced to invest over Rs. 50,000 crore in the infrastructure sector in the next few years. Construction sites are proliferating across the country, demanding more and more civil graduates. Fresh graduates can look for jobs in infrastructure projects, consultancy firms, quality testing laboratories, or housing societies. Major construction works of government projects, both state and central, in the railways, military, and highways need deft and dedicated civil engineers; various consultancy services too offer excellent avenues. According to experts, there is a high demand for experienced civil engineers in developed countries. Hundreds of civil engineers migrate from India to Canada, Australia, the Middle East, and other countries for better career prospects.
Remuneration:
A fresh graduate in civil engineering may initially earn Rs. 10,000–15,000 per month. In the government sector one could get an impressive pay package along with other perks in accordance to the terms and conditions of the government. A candidate with a few years of experience can get a handsome salary of Rs. 100,000 per month in countries such as Singapore, Dubai, UAE, and many other Western countries.
