Computer Engineering
This is a branch of engineering that studies elements both from electrical engineering and computer science and applies them to the making and development of computers and computer-based systems. The role of a computer engineer involves analyzing problems to find solutions, formulating and testing processes, using advanced communications or multimedia equipment, or working in teams for product development. Also known as Computer Science Engineering, the field is divided into 2 branches:
- Software Engineering
- Hardware Engineering

The eligibility criterion for admissions to a bachelor’s programme is a 10+2 pass in the Science stream with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as core subjects. The 2-year MTech course can be pursued after successfully completing an undergraduate course. One can also take up a diploma/certificate course after completing class 10. Students must go through entrance exams such as GATE for admissions to BTech and MTech courses.
Job Prospects:
Computers are penetrating almost every sector including education, health care, travel and tourism, entertainment, automobile, banking and insurance, construction, engineering, and telecommunication. Therefore, job opportunities are enormous for a computer science engineer in IT as well as non-IT domains. Employment of computer software engineers is projected to increase by 38 percent in the next 4 years, which is much higher than the average for all occupations. The IT sector will generate about 324,000 new jobs, over the projections decade, one of the largest employment increases for any occupation. The major recruiters of computer science graduates are AOL, Cognizant, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, Aditi Technologies, Wipro, HCL Technologies, and HP. Graduates can also be employed as researchers in various universities, private firms, and government departments. Chances of working abroad are very high in this field.
Remunerations:
The salary of a computer engineer is very high compared to that offered to other engineers. A fresher may receive anywhere between Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 25,000 per month. Impressive appraisals are assured for deserving individuals.
