1. Ocean Engineering
Ocean engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the development of equipment and techniques for the exploration of the ocean floor and exploitation of its resources. This field involves intense research of the ocean and its impact on the environment. It is actually a combination of several types of engineering: mechanical, electrical, civil, and chemical. Ocean engineers are by necessity innovative, creative, as well as effective team workers with good computer software knowledge. Despite being a new field of study it has already started to make waves amid students as there is so much yet to be discovered about our oceans. Therefore, graduates have a wide range of employment opportunities worldwide.

The eligibility criterion for admissions to a bachelor’s programme is a 10+2 pass in the Science stream with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as core subjects. The 2-year MTech course can be pursued after successfully completing an undergraduate course. Students must go through entrance exams such as GATE for admissions to BTech and MTech courses. Candidates can also take up a diploma course after completing class 10.
Career Prospects :
Ocean engineers have vast employment opportunities as their employment is expected to increase by 10% in the coming years. There is a lot of scope for ocean engineers in consultancy, marketing and sales, operations, regulation, surveying and overseeing, research and development, and education and training. Ocean engineers are employed by classification societies as ship surveyors who work on evaluating the safety of ships and marine structures worldwide. They are also employed to give professional advice and technical support to customers of the offshore industry. Great careers are open to ocean engineers in India and abroad in offshore oil recovery, marine metals and corrosion, environmental protection, global climate monitoring, renewable energy, underwater vehicles, remote sensing, marine transportation, and naval architecture and defense.
Remuneration:
The starting salary of an ocean engineering graduate employed in a government sector enterprise such as ONGC and Bombay High may be about Rs. 20,000 to 25,000 per month. MNCs and reputed companies such as Reliance Petroleum, Bharat Petroleum, and EXXON offer a starting salary of Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 30,000 per month. Salaries of professionals deputed to Gulf countries go up to about 10,000 to Rs. 12,000 dinars per month, plus perks.
