The job of an accessory designer is to create accessories such as jewellery, leatherwear (belts, buckles, handbags, gloves), glass products, footwear, watches, scarves, giftware, tableware, silverware and many other lifestyle products that can either redefine the trends or blend with the prevailing fashions. Lifestyle accessories have been transformed from mere utility based products to a fashion statement, integrating aesthetics values with practicality. Career in jewelry designing and accessory designing have become one of the most profitable careers in India.
Courses & eligibility:
There are several diploma, advanced diploma and certificate programs that are available in accessory designing. Candidates with a good knowledge of CAD (Computer Aided Design) can apply for different accessory design & technology courses at the post graduate level.
Career Prospects:
Graduates can find employment in costume, jewellery, leatherwear, glass products, footwear, watches, scarves, giftware, tableware and silverware industries. Large firms employ staff designers or more frequently, commission freelance designers. Small workshops and firms usually work for orders from fashion houses or for particular wholesalers and retail outlets. Designers can also work independently as self-owned enterprises. Highly qualified and creative fashion designers have lucrative career option abroad, mainly in cities like New York, London, and Paris etc.
Remuneration:
Fresh graduates from this field can easily earn around Rs 10,000 to 15,000 per month. Export houses offer high salaries along with other incentives. Self-employed designers can earn handsomely, provided they are experienced and recognized.
