Career Guide for Gemology Studies

Gemology is a branch of mineralogy that deals with the study of gem materials, including identification and testing methods, cutting and polishing synthetically manufactured gems, precious metals and alloys, their sources and origins as well as grading and appraising. Gemologists identify the gems and advises the jeweler about the compatibility of gems to particular metals. Studies relating to this field are gem cutting, sorting, grading, valuation and identification of gemstones, fashion, computer pattern designing, jewelry making, consultancy regarding stones, selling etc. From the trade point of view, gems and jewelry has been one of the biggest foreign exchange earner for India. Therefore, there is always a demand for trained professionals in this field. .

The minimum eligibility to pursue a bachelor’s/diploma course in gemology is +2 with 55% aggregate in the science stream. Master’s/post graduate diploma courses can be pursued after graduation.

Career Prospects:

A gemologist can begin working as gem grinders, gem polishers, jewelery setters, researchers and scientists. Major gemstone companies like the Masterpiece Jewellery(India), Chunilal Nathalal & Sons, B V Jewels, Pinkcity Colorstones Pvt. Ltd, Derika International, Janki export etc. are major recruiters of gemologist. One can also open his own retail and trading units. Indian gem cutters and craftsmen are held in high regard the world over. Further, the increasing numbers of affluent individuals, working women, double-income households and fashion-conscious men are expected to keep gems and jewelry sales on the go. In general, jewelry retailers benefit during a strong economy, when people are willing to buy more. But when the economy fluctuates, so do opportunities.

Remuneration:

Fresh graduates in gemology can get a starting salary of Rs. 10000-15000 per month. This figure may surge with experience and recognition.
