Career Guide for Hospitality Management Studies

Thanks to globalization and modernization, India has become a favorite destination for business, trade and tourism where hospitality management is key to maintain an aura with decorum on par with the developed countries. According to a recent Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report of World Economic Forum, India is ranked 11th in the Asia Pacific region and 62nd overall, up three places since 2008, in terms of world’s attractive destinations . India is well assessed for its natural resources (ranked 14th) and cultural resources (24th), with many World Heritage sites, both natural and cultural, rich fauna, and strong creative industries in the country. India also has quite a good air transport network (ranked 37th), particularly given the country’s stage of development, and a reasonable ground transport infrastructure (ranked 49th). These statistics indicate the growing importance of hospitality in the country. The word ‘hospitality’ can be defined as a relationship between a visitor and a host. In other words, hospitality mainly concentrates on the services provided to the customers. The field of hospitality requires skills like sense of responsibility, helpful as well as friendly nature and attractive appearance.

Courses & Eligibility:

One has to clear 10+2 level of examination with any stream from a recognized state/national Board, to be eligible for UG programs. For the PG courses, graduation in relevant stream from any recognized University is mandatory. Some of the common hospitality courses are Diploma in House Keeping, Craftsmanship Course in Food and Beverage Service, Diploma in Bakery and Confectionery, Certificate Course in Hotel and Catering Management, Diploma in Front Office, Post Graduate Diploma in Dietetics and Hospital Food Service, M.Sc in Hospitality Administration etc. In regard to the courses in the field of hospitality, students are imparted technicalities about various aspects of the relevant subjects, apart from practical exposure and theoretical knowledge.

Career Prospects:

A career in hospitality means a candidate can work as a catering officer or a chef in hotels, customer relations executive, management trainee, marketing/sales executive, kitchen management and housekeeping management. Moreover, one can also join as executive in tourism development corporations, resort properties, teachers in hotel management institutes, Ayurveda and spa centers, café’s bars, discotheques, food craft institutes and cabin crew in national and international airlines.

Remuneration:

After successful completion of a mandatory training/probation by a graduate, he/she may be absorbed in positions with salaries between Rs 7,000 to Rs 10, 000. The pay package could increase appropriately with experience.
