Supply chain management (SCM) is the control of the supply chain as a process from supplier to manufacturer to wholesaler to retailer to consumer. Supply chain management does not involve only the movement of a physical product (such as a microchip) through the chain but also any data that goes along with the product (such as order status information, payment schedules, and ownership titles) and the actual entities that handle the product from stage to stage of the supply chain. The role of a supply chain manager is to concentrate on distribution network configuration, distribution strategy, information, inventory management and cash flow. In the world of globalization, many manufacturing firms aim for efficient supply chain system for the effective distribution of their commodities. Therefore, such organizations are always on the hunt for skilled supply chain managers. Many aspiring students are now showing interest in this field owing to the ever increasing demand for professionals in the same.
Course Details
Many management and technical institutes in India offercourses in supply chain management. The courses are mostly offered at postgraduate and diploma levels. To be eligible for admission, students must be graduates with degree in retail management/finance/B.E. /B. Tech/BBA or any other stream from any recognized institute/university.
Career Prospects:
Supply chain management as a career is very promising as well as challenging. Professionals can be inducted as directors, managers, or as consultants in supply chain management. They can look out for a career in manufacturing industries, transportation sector, aviation, shipping conglomerates and so on.A graduate can work in any business organization as a commodity buyer, supply planner, supplier manager, purchasing executive, implementation manager, procurement officer, material manager, inventory manager etc..
Remuneration:
Beginners can earn between Rs 10000 and 15000 per month, in the field of supply management. A person with two or three years of experience may get around Rs 18000 – 22000 per month. The salary package for those who are working at the higher level, can easily be Rs 8.00 – 12.00 lakhs per fiscal year.
