Career Guide for Publishing Studies
The word publishing denotes a huge amount of publishing work that includes the printing and publishing of books, newspapers, magazines, periodicals and journals. One would think that with the advent of the techno-age, the publishing industry would go completely out of business. To the collective relief of thousands of publishers and zillions of print lovers, this is one dire prophecy that doesn’t seem to be proving true. The publishing industry, along with an inherent love of the printed word, seems to be thriving. To build a career in the field of publishing, one has to gain knowledge about its several techniques, which includes development, acquisition, copy-editing, graphic designing, production, printing, marketing and distribution of written materials and information through various media.
Courses & Eligibility:
After XII (any subject), graduation/post graduation in journalism are suitable for shouldering editorial responsibility. Class XII (PCM) followed by a diploma in printing technology can join the production department Students can enroll themselves in any of these courses for a career in publishing – Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Book Publishing, Publishing Professionals Course Content, NBT Training Course in Book Publishing or Diploma in Printing Technology. .
Career Prospects:
After completing a course related to publishing, one can work in the publication division, as an editor, assistant sub editor, sub editor, assistant editor or associate editor. A highly qualified and experienced candidate may find openings in government press, commercial press, a newspaper office or any publishing house. Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Ministry of Education and Culture have their own publication divisions which offer a commendable remuneration and other perks for experienced professionals. Graduates can also be employed in production/sales & marketing departments of a publishing house.
Remuneration:
Fresh graduates can expect a salary between Rs 8000-Rs15000 per month initially in the public sector. Within a few months of experience, the salary may shoot up to Rs. 20000 – Rs25000 per month . Senior editors in a publication house can earn more than Rs50000 pm including other perks.
