Career Guide for Video Jockey Studies
As the name implies, a video jockey’s responsibilities are very similar to those of a disc jockey, with the main difference being that video jockeys introduce music videos on TV, as opposed to introducing songs on the radio. A VJ is expected to amuse the audience through witty anchoring and presentation.
They adopt a unique style of delivery, which usually determines their popularity among the general public. A video jockey usually answers to the program director or the general manager at the station. It may be required of the video jockey to work regular hours, or to tape all his or her shows in a given time period. To be successful a video jockey should have a unique personality and a pleasant appearance. They should be comfortable around TV cameras and studio sets. They should also have a good speaking voice and be articulate and personable.
Courses and Eligibility:
A formal education is not required to become a video jockey, but due to competition, a college degree in television, broadcasting, or the music business can come in handy. Several institutions have started offering certificate programs in this field. The coursework focuses on tweaking the skills of public speaking, writing, and presenting oneself.
Career Prospects:
The proliferation of music channels as well as game, travel, and chitchat shows has increased the demand for adept video jockeys. They are being hired to compeer shows on numerous international/national music channels such as MTV, Channel V, and B4U Music; local/regional music channels too have a great demand for VJs. Other than anchoring, VJs can opt for modeling, acting in music videos and films, and even working as PR executives. Professionals who have a good voice and a thorough knowledge of trends in music can work as DJs and RJs.
Remuneration:
Beginners can earn between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 15,000 per month. A popular and experienced VJ can earn six-figure salaries.
