Career Guide for Audiology Studies

Audiology is an allied health science, which deals with the study of hearing disorders. These problems may be a result of trauma at birth, viral infections, genetic disorders, exposure to loud noise, certain medications, or aging. Using various types of testing equipment, audiologists design the course of treatment and rehabilitation strategies depending on the situations. These professionals are on high demand in health care facilities.

Courses & Eligibility:

B.Sc in audiology is offered at the undergraduate level. Eligibility for the course is 10+2 in science stream with biology as the core subject. The course duration varies from 3 to 4 years. After completing the bachelor’s degree one can opt for the 2 year M.Sc programme. For practising, an audiologist is required to get registered with either the Indian Speech and Hearing Association (ISHA) or the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). Diploma courses are also available and the eligibility for the same is class X.

Career Prospects:

Audiologists have multiple career options. They can work in government and private hospitals, health centres, clinics and nursing homes. Job opportunities are also available in community care centres, community clinics, rehabilitation centers, centre for disabled, nursing care facilities and clinics run by college and universities. Teaching in medical or para-medical colleges is also an option for these professionals. of audiologists is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations in the near future. Employment in health and rehabilitation services will increase as a result of advances in medical technology and growth in the elderly population. In addition, as awareness of the importance of the early recognition and treatment of hearing problems increases, so will the demand for professionals in elementary and secondary schools.

Remuneration:

Audiologists may start earning a monthly salary of Rs 8,000-10,000. In private hospitals and clinics the pay scale is higher, which may start from Rs.15, 000. An audiologist can even earn up to Rs 25,000-30,000 pm within 4-5 years of experience.
