Microbiology, in simple terms, is the study organisms so small that, generally, they can only be seen with a microscope. These microorganisms include bacteria, algae, yeasts, fungi, protozoa, viruses, and other microscopic forms of life. Microbiologists work in several areas. Many do basic research to increase knowledge about the life processes common to microbes. They isolate and identify disease-producing organisms and study their distribution. They also study the ways that the organisms enter the bodies of humans and animals, establish themselves and cause disease. These findings are employed in medicine. Courses & Eligibility:

Several institutions in India offer degree programs at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the field of microbiology. Minimum requirement for admission in an undergraduate program is 10+2 in science stream (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or biology), while for the post graduate programs, the candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in microbiology/life science.

Microbiologists are employed in the related field of public health. They work to combat problems such as outbreaks of epidemics, food poisoning, and the pollution of air and water. Graduates can be inducted as Bacteriologists, Environmental Microbiologists, Food Microbiologists, Industrial Microbiologists, Medical Microbiologists, Mycologists, Protozoologists, Biochemist, Biotechnologist, Biomedical Scientist, Cell Biologists, Geneticists, Immunologists, Parasitologists, and Virologists in various related organizations. They can even choose to become a science writer or a teacher which is a promising career option.

Remuneration:

The remuneration of microbiologists depends on the area of specialization chosen by them. A beginner can earn between Rs.15000-Rs.20000 per month. With experience and qualification, one can expect a higher remuneration.
