The field of molecular biology involves many other areas of biology such as biochemistry and genetics. A molecular biologist studies about the functions of cells at molecular level. The scope of molecular biology is very wide and covers the problems in the fields of transcriptomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, biomedicine, molecular enzymology, molecular virology, and molecular immunology, molecular development biology, and molecular evolution, theoretical bases of biotechnology, physics and physical chemistry of proteins and nucleic acids. If you have a liking for Genetics, then Molecular Biology which is a sub-division of Genetics is sure to excite you as well.
Courses & Eligibility
The programs in Molecular Biology are offered mainly at post-graduation level. A candidate would be eligible to pursue M.Sc in Molecular Biology if he/she has studied Biology at the Intermediate and Graduation Level. A B.Sc. in Genetics, Microbiology, Zoology or Botany also fulfills the eligibility criteria of pursuing M.Sc in Molecular Biology.
Career Prospects:
There is a great opportunity of this field of genetics in India in research institutes like HH Biotechnology Agra, Lucknow (Research Associates in Molecular Biology). Moreover, Molecular and Cell Biologists find employment opportunities in research labs established by Government of India or in the R&D departments of various private pharmaceutical industries .
Remuneration:
The salary of a Molecular Biologists is satisfying both in government and private sectors. However, private companies working on research and development (R&D) for drug development offer better remuneration and benefits to the professionals.
