Career Guide for Ophthalmology Studies
Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine dealing with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of the eye and visual system. Ophthalmologists diagnose and treat diseases of the eye, including glaucoma and cataracts; vision problems such as nearsightedness; and eye injuries. They use a variety of instruments, including ophthalmoscopes, which enable them to see the inner part of the eye. They can prescribe medicine, contact lenses, and eyeglasses. Sometimes, they recommend eye exercises. When necessary, they may even perform eye surgery. and family doctors often refer patients with serious eye conditions to ophthalmologists.
Courses & eligibility:
Firstly, one should complete his/her MBBS degree and then opt for post-graduation in Ophthalmology. The degrees offered are Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), Master of Surgery (M.S.) and Diploma in Ophthalmic Medicine and Surgery (DOMS). After completing the internships, ophthalmologists must pass exams and other requirements for certification in their specialty.
Career Prospects:
The demand for ophthalmologists have increased because of a larger elderly population and extended health-care benefits. Central and state governments recruit ophthalmologists for hospitals run by them. However most of the ophthalmologists prefer private hospitals, nursing homes and clinics because of high pay packages. Experienced ophthalmologists also can start their own eye-clinics. Some of them can also work with NGOs, missionary and charitable hospitals. There is huge demand for Indian ophthalmologists in abroad particularly in USA, UK, Australia and Gulf countries.
Remuneration:
Ophthalmic technology is a highly remunerative career option. A fresh graduate working in government hospitals can earn Rs 12,000- 15,000 per month. Private hospitals offer Rs 25,000-40,000 per month depending on the candidate’s skill and experience. Senior eye-surgeons can earn Rs 60,000 to 1 lac per month.
