Geology is a branch of science that deals about the earth’s origin, environment, minerals, history, surroundings et al. Professionals in this field are called as Geologist who play a vital role in exploring mineral wealth and natural resources. Geologist determines the quality of soil by conducting geo-chemical/geo-physical tests and explores natural resources deep in the sea. Their reports on density of earth helps in constructing roads, dams, bridges and underground tunnels . Owing to the availability of diverse natural resources and modernization which has lead to infrastructural developments, Geologist are in great demand and a lot of job opportunities are available in this field .

The entry qualification for B.Sc general or honours is 10+2 with 50% of marks in the Science stream. For Master’s degree the criteria is 50% marks in Bachelor’s degree and for Ph.D it is 55% marks in Master’s degree. One can break into the field with a Bachelor’s degree but advanced study is highly recommended.
Career Prospects:
Companies and organizations like Central Ground Water Board and the Geological Survey of India, Coal India, Oil & Natural Gas Corporation, Mineral Exploration Authority, Hindustan Zinc etc. are offering several job opportunities for Geologist with good packages and other perks. Defense and other Para- military forces are recruiting Geologist for various purposes. Moreover, the scope of this field is widening because of the growing environmental concerns triggered by pollution and other related issues.
Remunerations:
A fresher in entry level gets a salary between Rs.10000 – 20000 per month which is poised to get better with experience. Geologists working in government sectors like ONGC, IOC etc. get a salary of Rs.25000-35000 p.m with other benefits and facilities.
