MUMBAI: A day after the merit list was announced, anxious students and parents on Wednesday rushed to various city colleges in a bid to secure their FYJC seats.

With cut-offs scaling new heights in the first bifocal merit list, many students were not allotted seats in the college of their choice. “But we cannot take a chance and give the seat away because competition is very stiff this year,” said one student.

M B Kekare, principal of Patkar College in Goregaon, said: “Both students and parents were very anxious. Almost 70% of the students who got into our college have already confirmed their admissions or sought provisional admission with us. The remaining will do so on Thursday.”

It was a similar scene at all colleges offering bifocals in science and commerce. Students have been asked to confirm their admissions with colleges by paying Rs 50. Only then will they be eligible for a betterment option in the next list. “More than 50% of the students on our merit list had queries and doubts about the admission process. We addressed their problems and secured their seat. The rest of the batch will show up on Thursday either to get provisional admission or confirm their place at our college,” said Mehak Gvalani, vice-principal (junior college) of K C College.

To avoid huge crowds and confusion, some colleges asked students to come in batches.

The principal of Ruparel College said the admission process went off smoothly on Wednesday. “Students from aided and unaided batches were assigned separate classrooms for the admission process. Almost every student was accompanied by three to four family members, which becomes a little difficult to handle,” said Desai.

Both students and parents were anxious. Almost 70% of the students who got into our college have confirmed
admissions or sought provisional admission.
