IIITD&M Increases Its Student Intake

25, Nov 2011

Established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in 2007, the Indian Institute of Information Technology Design and Manufacturing (IIITD&M), Kancheepuram, has increased its intake of BTech students by 10. In each of its streams it will now take 30 students where it was taking only 20. Two seats in each stream will be reserved under the DASA (Direct Admission to Students Abroad) scheme.

The first batch of students was admitted to the department of Mechanical Engineering (Design & Manufacturing). Later, BTech program in Electronics Engineering (D&M) and Computer Engineering were introduced.

The three BTech program offered are the first of their kind engineering program that are IT-enabled and focused on design and manufacturing. They augment other related courses with design and manufacturing aspects. The curricula of these programs have been framed by the Senate (Academic Advisory Council) of the institute; it includes academicians from IITs, IISc, experts from relevant industries, and faculty members of the institute.

The MDes (Master of Design) program in Electronic Systems Design and Mechanical Systems Design is being offered since August 2010. Its objective is to equip mechanical and electrical / electronics engineers with design skills required for the design and development of mechanical and electronic products.

Admissions to the MDes program are based on GATE / CEED scores. These novel and innovative programs have attracted students from all over India. High-ranking AIEEE students have been admitted to the institute’s BTech programs. Since 2009 the institute has also been offering interdisciplinary PhD programs in Computer Programming, Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, and Mathematics.

The institute claims that the placement of the first batch of students specializing in Mechanical Engineering (Design & Manufacturing) was very impressive. Around 60 percent of students have been placed in industries that focus on design and manufacturing while another 20 percent secured offers for MS / PhD admission from reputed universities abroad.

The institute commenced its operations at the IIT-Madras (Mentor institute) campus. In August 2011, it commenced its academic operations with residential accommodation in a phased manner from Melakottaiyur.

The State government has earmarked 50 acres for IIITD&M at Melakottayur village (off Vandalur-Kelambakkam Main Road) in Kancheepuram for a permanent campus.
