Top Companies Recruit 769 IIT-M Students

The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) has done it a shade better. In 2011 a total of 769 students at IIT-M were placed in top-notch companies compared to 627 the year before. Mr. B. Nagarajan, deputy registrar (training, placement and public relations), IIT-M, said that in 2011 of the 1,208 students who registered with the placement office 769 students (63 percent) were given offer letters by 209 companies. In 2010, 627 students were recruited by 172 companies. In the campus recruitment that started on December 1, 2010, there were 115 companies from core engineering sectors and only six public sector companies. Some of the core engineering companies were Ashok Leyland, Hyundai, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Hero Moto Corp. The first phase of placement saw first-time companies such as Sony Corporation Japan, Pocket Gems, Infoaxe, EPIC USA, Honda, NTT Communications Japan, and Gulf Talent. For some placements in the USA, the annual compensation offered has been as high as $135,000. In general, most of the companies have offered packages between Rs 4 lakhs and Rs 15 lakhs per annum.
Students placed in Hyundai Motors will be sponsored for a two-year postgraduate programme in a top management or engineering school in South Korea. On successful completion of this programme, they will have the opportunity to work at the company’s headquarters in South Korea for two years as part of professional development programme.
