Apple Set to Start Its Own University
Though Apple’s founder Steve Jobs’s passing was definitely sad for the entire technology industry––for Silicon Valley and certainly for everyone who has personally experienced the man’s energy, creativity, and charisma––Apple seems to be focused on the road ahead. The Los Angeles Times reports that an Apple team has been working on a top-secret project to create an executive training program called Apple University. Their objective? To train people to think like Steve Jobs.

UK Declares Nearly 1,900 Indian Banks as Invalid for Student Visa
Stricter visa norms are being imposed on Indian students aspiring to study in the UK. Britain has published a list of nearly 1,900 banks in India whose financial statements will not be accepted for student visa purposes––a move that is set to affect thousands of Indian students wanting to study in the UK. The new list has the names of only 85 banks operating in India whose statements will be accepted for the purpose of obtaining student visas.

Australia Cancels Visas of 15,066 Students for Flouting Rules
The Australian Immigration Department has cancelled nearly 15,066 student visas of foreign nationals, including Indians, for breaching visa conditions. That figure marked a 37 percent spike from the previous year.

IELTS Scholarships 2011 for Indian Students
Eight students from different parts of India were awarded the British Council Scholarships on August 30 for studying abroad. The scholarships were for Rs. 3 lakh each and were based on the candidate’s performance in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test. These eight students were selected from around 700 applicants based on their writing skills. The essays were on themes such as brain drain and improving literacy rates. The scholarship money is deposited directly into the university’s account. Mike Nithavrianakis, British Deputy High Commissioner to South India, presented the awards to the students.

U.S. Keen on More Educational Collaboration with India
On August 9, speaking at the one-day International Education Fair organized by Rajalakshmi Engineering College (Thandalam, near Chennai), Jennifer McIntyre, Consul General, U.S. Consulate, Chennai, said that “India and the U.S. have strong ties in the area of education. Over 100,000 Indians study in the U.S. and the number continues to increase each year. The U.S. continues to look for ways to increase collaboration and opportunities between the two countries.” Adding that although there are over 12 million Indians enrolled in over 500 universities and 20,000 colleges, “there are approximately half a billion Indians under the age of 25.
