UK Declares Nearly 1,900 Indian Banks as Invalid for Student Visa
Stricter visa norms are being imposed on Indian students aspiring to study in the UK. Britain has published a list of nearly 1,900 banks in India whose financial statements will not be accepted for student visa purposes––a move that is set to affect thousands of Indian students wanting to study in the UK. The new list has the names of only 85 banks operating in India whose statements will be accepted for the purpose of obtaining student visas.

New Schengen Visa System for Non-EU Applicants
In an attempt to prevent fraud, the European Union (EU) has launched a new Visa Information System (VIS) for Indians and other non-EU citizens applying for a Schengen visa. Indian citizens seeking to visit the 25 countries in the Schengen area in European Union need the Schengen visa.

Australia Cancels Visas of 15,066 Students for Flouting Rules
The Australian Immigration Department has cancelled nearly 15,066 student visas of foreign nationals, including Indians, for breaching visa conditions. That figure marked a 37 percent spike from the previous year.

Innovation-based 4-Year Degree Course at Delhi University
Delhi University has planned to take education to new and exciting levels, going beyond the confines of classrooms and textbooks to innovation and hands-on learning. The proposed degree program in mathematics and information and communication technology (ICT) will be interdisciplinary. The course will train students to specialize in diverse fields and encourage them to take up innovations in varied disciplines such as research, engineering, signal processing, and computer science through industry-based projects. The course will give 60% weightage to projects and innovations and 40% to classroom learning.

IELTS Scholarships 2011 for Indian Students
Eight students from different parts of India were awarded the British Council Scholarships on August 30 for studying abroad. The scholarships were for Rs. 3 lakh each and were based on the candidate’s performance in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test. These eight students were selected from around 700 applicants based on their writing skills. The essays were on themes such as brain drain and improving literacy rates. The scholarship money is deposited directly into the university’s account. Mike Nithavrianakis, British Deputy High Commissioner to South India, presented the awards to the students.

The purpose of the National Talent Search Scheme, an activity of the NCERT started in 1963, was to identify exceptional students and nurture their talent. The scheme covers areas such as Sciences, Social Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, Management, and Law. It recognizes and helps talented students by providing financial assistance in the form of a monthly scholarship. For the courses in Basic Sciences, Social Sciences, and Commerce, this assistance is provided up to doctoral level. For professional courses such as Engineering, Medicine, Management, and Law this assistance is given only up to postgraduation. A good CAT score leads to admission to the postgraduate programs in management conducted at the IIMs in Kozhikode, Tiruchirappalli, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Indore, Kashipur, Lucknow, Raipur, Ranchi, Rohtak, Shillong, and Udaipur. Admissions to the Fellow Program in Management (FPM), equivalent to a Ph.D. programme, at the IIMs in Kozhikode, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Indore, Lucknow, Raipur, Ranchi, and Tiruchirappalli is also based on the CAT score. »Read More

U.S. Keen on More Educational Collaboration with India
On August 9, speaking at the one-day International Education Fair organized by Rajalakshmi Engineering College (Thandalam, near Chennai), Jennifer McIntyre, Consul General, U.S. Consulate, Chennai, said that “India and the U.S. have strong ties in the area of education. Over 100,000 Indians study in the U.S. and the number continues to increase each year. The U.S. continues to look for ways to increase collaboration and opportunities between the two countries.” Adding that although there are over 12 million Indians enrolled in over 500 universities and 20,000 colleges, “there are approximately half a billion Indians under the age of 25.
