Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE)
Introduction:
Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE) is a component program under Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) program, which is a flagship scheme of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.
INSPIRE programme includes three components namely Scheme for Early Attraction of Talents for Science (SEATS), Scholarships for Higher Education (SHE) and Assured Opportunity for Research Careers (AORC).
The scheme SHE aims to augment youth to undertake higher education in Science programmes by providing scholarships to deserving students. SHE is focused on attraction of talent to study of natural/ basic sciences at the bachelor and master’s level education. SHE is currently limited to support for educational programmes at BSc, BSc (Hons), MSc and integrated master’s level course in sciences leading to MSc in any branch of natural and basic sciences namely mathematics, statistics, physics, chemistry, earth sciences and life sciences in any one of the recognized institutions in India. Total of 10,000 scholarships are available annually under the scheme SHE, each valued at Rs. 80,000/-
.Eligibilty
Candidates are selected for SHE on the basis of their performance in Board Examination and Competitive Examination
a) Based on the performance in Board Examinations : Candidates who have obtained the top most marks in the board examination of class XII of any State/ Central Board in India are eligible. The percentage of cut off marks of various States/ Central Boards may varies. Those candidates who are pursuing courses in Natural and Basic Sciences at the B.Sc. or Integrated M.Sc. level; Natural and Sciences include Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology and Earth Sciences are also eligible.
Courses other than these subjects (such as Engineering Sciences, Computer Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Electronic Sciences and Medical and Bio-medical Sciences) are NOT included in the current scheme.
b) Based on the performance in Competitive Examinations : Candidates are selected for SHE on the basis of their performance in any of the following specified national level competitive examinations within stipulated cut off ranks.
Joint Entrance Examination of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT – JEE)
All Indian Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE)
CBSE Medical Board
c) Candidates those who cleared the competitive examinations and joined for courses in Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER); National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER); Department of Atomic Energy – Centre for Basic Science (DAE-CBS) and integrated 5 year MSc programs in Basic and Natural Sciences at all Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) are also eligible.
Besides these, All Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojna (KVPY) Fellows; National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) Scholars and Olympiad Medalists and Jagadis Bose National Science Talent Search (JBNSTS) Fellows can apply for SHE scheme.
The age limit for applying to SHE is minimum 17 years and maximum 22 years.
Application Procedure
Those candidates who satisfy the eligible criteria can apply for SHE in a prescribed format written preferable in English or Hindi along with attested copy of i) Certificate of Class X Board Examination for verification of Date of Birth ii) Mark sheets of Class XII Board Examination
iii) Copy of the Eligibility Certificate/ Note for students passed in the respective year
iv) Endorsement Certificate from Principal of the College/ Director or Registrar of the Institute or University where the applicant is presently enrolled.
Application Format are available at the website www.inspire-dst.gov.in for online and off-line submission. Applicants both offline and on-line, must submit Hardcopy of the duly filled-in application with all necessary documents to the Director, National Institute of Science, Technology & Development Studies (NISTADS), Dr K S Krishnan Marg , New Delhi – 110012 by Ordinary Post only within 90 days from the date of this advertisement in Newspaper.
The envelope should mention on top “Application for Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE)” program.
Selection
Selection process for SHE may takes at least three to four months from the date of advertisement. The list of selected candidates will be announced on the DST website, followed by an official letter from the DST to the candidates permanent address. If a candidate have not received their offer letter even after one month of the announcement of results, please contact DST office.
The selected candidates will receive their annual scholarships in at least two installments (2 x Rs. 30000/ per annum) through State Bank of India via the SMART CARD mode. Smart card is like any other ATM card specially designed by the State Bank of India to disperse the scholarships to the selected candidates. The scholars can withdraw their scholarship from the SBI ATMs across India. For using the Smart Card option, It is not necessary for the Scholar to have any account with the SBI. The smart card is operable in ATMs of any bank across the country.
After receiving the offer letter from the DST, the following documents should be sent by the selected candidates :
Filled e-Z application form. (This form is usually sent by the DST to the candidates along with the offer letter. In case you have not received the e-Z application form, please visit our website to download one.)
Self attested copy of Proof of Residence (Permanent address).
Self attested copy of Proof of Photo Identity.
In case of scholars pursuing their second or third year B.Sc/ B.Sc (Hons) courses, in addition to the above documents, completed endorsement forms along with self attested copies of your first year (or second year) marks card should be sent. (The blank endorsement form is usually sent by the DST to the candidates along with the offer letter. In case you have not received the form, please visit the website to download it.)
Also write your INSPIRE registration number on top of the documents you are sending. The INSPIRE Registration number will be mentioned in the DST Secretary’s offer letter. It is a serial number followed by year of passing of your XII examination and is found usually in the top left hand side of the letter.

Scholarship Rates
Eligible SHE scholars will receive an annually scholarship of total value Rs 80,000 per candidate.
The cash value payable to the SHE scholarship holder will be Rs 60,000 per annum. All the SHE scholars are required to undertake a summer time research projects under an active researcher in any recognized research centers in India. A summer time attachment fee of Rs 20,000 will be paid to the mentoring institution for undertaking summer time project.
Selected candidates will be supported for a maximum period of five years starting 1st year course in B.Sc., B.Sc. (Hons) and integrated course leading to M.S. or M.Sc or the completion of the course, which ever is earlier.
Continuation of the scholarship for the selected candidates is based on their satisfactory performance in the examinations conducted by the University and certified by the institution imparting education.
