Sichuan International Studies University (SISU) was founded in April 1950 under the care and guidance of Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping, Liu Bocheng and other proletarian revolutionaries of the People’s Republic. It has so far gone through five stages in its development, beginning as the Russian Training Corps of Southwest Military and Political University, People's Liberation Army; then becoming the Russian Group of No. 2 Senior Infantry School, PLA; next the Russian Department of Southwest People's Revolutionary University; later the Southwest Russian School and finally Sichuan Foreign Language Institute. (currently known as Sichuan International Studies University, or SISU). Mr. Guo Moruo, the noted scholar and calligrapher, personally wrote the calligraphy for the university’s name.Located at the foot of Gele Mountain and by the Jialing River in Chongqing, China’s fourth municipality directly under the central government, SISU covers an area of 1,100 mu with quiet, secluded and beautiful surroundings. Because of its pleasant campus, the municipal government granted the college the title of “a garden-like work unit� of Chongqing. Through 60 year's of development, the school has grown from the initial Russian college with only one major subject into an international studies university that offers education on different levels and in different forms, embracing post-graduate education, undergraduate education, 3-year college education, higher vocational and technical education, continuing education, and intensified language training courses. It is a college which offers a dozen foreign language courses such as Russian, English, French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Arabic, Korean, Italian, Hindi, and Vietnamese while specializing in a dozen other disciplines such as translation, law, journalism, radio and television, advertising, Chinese as a foreign language, Chinese language and literature, the media broadcasting, tourist management, human resources management, international economics and trade, diplomacy, international politics, and business English. The college currently has 18 academic departments and subordinate colleges, 2 independent colleges, 26 specialties for undergraduate education, 18 master degree programs and a number of test centers at the national level, such as TOEFL, IELTS, TestDaF, GRE, HSK, JPLT, and NAETI. At the same time, SISU is also a foreign language training center for Chongqing’s party members.Making full use of its advantages in foreign language education, SISU puts literature courses at the core of its education, while developing related disciplines in coordination, such as economics, management, law, education, and philosophy. Since its establishment, SISU has graduated more than 100,000 talented professionals and many of them have become risen to elite levels and become indispensible in their respective fields of work.SISU recruits students who major in the arts or sciences at middle schools from all over the country. Currently there is a total enrolment of 14,000 students. SISU graduates are well received and highly valued by their employers. The employment rate is 100 percent for postgraduates, and above 90 percent for undergraduates.SISU boasts a strong contingent of devoted, qualified and experienced teachers with a high academic level. Many of the teachers are scholars or model teachers; some were granted special allowance by the State Council; some have been recognized as excellent teachers or educators at the national level; some have been given the title of expert with outstanding contributions at the provincial/ministerial level; some are academic leaders at the provincial level; some are members of the second column of Chongqing Project 322 for the training of professional people; some are famous teachers at the provincial level; some are Chongqing’s experts on teachers’ ethics; some are excellent teachers of Chongqing; some are distinguished middle-aged or young college teachers in Chongqing. A considerable number of foreign teachers and experts are invited to teach at SISU each year.Some of the specialties and courses offered at SISU are classified as national elite level courses; some are key disciplines at the provincial level; some are the best courses at the national and provincial levels; some are the best courses being planned at the provincial level; and some are the first batch of disciplines with unique characteristics being planned in Chongqing.Inter-college exchanges have been established between SISU and more than 60 universities in other countries such as the United States, Great Britain, France, Russia, Germany, Japan, Spain, Italy, the Republic of Korea, Cuba, and Egypt. Extensive cooperation and exchanges have been going on between SISU and other Chinese colleges in the training of teachers and education of undergraduates and postgraduates.In addition to its more than 20 institutions for academic research, SISU has two key academic research centers for humanity and social studies at the provincial level: the Center for Linguistic, Literary and Cultural Studies and the Center for Comparative Literature and Comparative Culture Studies. Foreign Language and Literature, a journal published by the college is a core journal in China, a source of the expanded version of CSSCI, one of the top 100 journals in social sciences, a first class journal in Chongqing and an important platform for displaying achievements in academic research in foreign language studies. SISU’s academic research has been fruitful, having published a considerable number of monographs, dictionaries, translations and textbooks that are influential both at home and abroad.SISU library boasts a collection of more than a million volumes of foreign language and literature works as published originally in foreign countries and reference books on language studies. In addition, SISU has subscribed to about 3,000 different periodicals in both Chinese and foreign languages. The college has classrooms with multi-media aides and sound labs for foreign language teaching, many of which are the best in southwest China. Advanced teaching facilities have provided a guarantee for teaching, academic research and management at SISU.Following the school motto of “Unity, Diligence, Rigorous Attitude and Realistic Approach,� SISU has been carrying on the strategy of making it “a college governed by law, established on the basis of high quality, well-known for its unique features and powerful for its talented educators.� Rooted in Chongqing, based in southwest China, serving the whole of China and going global, SISU is trying its best to develop into a top level foreign language university with distinctive characteristics.
