About Us
The Macarthur Building Industry Skills Centre, or MBISC, is a specialist building industry training centre located in the heart of Ingleburn’s industrial precinct. The Skills Centre delivers a range of pre-employment programs for young people, including a building industry focused HSC program, and specialist training for high risk licences in the building industry.Institute Director, Peter Roberts, says the centre is expected to become a hub for building industry training, innovation and learning in the south western Sydney region as jobs in the building and construction industry are set to grow in the area by 11% pa to 2014.“This new training facility is helping TAFE NSW – South Western Sydney Institute close the gap between employment and unemployment in the south western Sydney region and provide industry skilled graduates to the building and construction industry. It’s also assisting the Institute to remain at the forefront of building and construction training, he said.“We are extremely proud to have these outstanding training facilities to provide high quality graduates that meet the needs of industry. The building contains more than 3,000 square metres of teaching and workshop spaces, social and study areas for students, computer labs, conference facilities and administrative offices space. The existing workshop was converted in 2010 to accommodate a variety of building programs including specific areas for the construction of full-sized transportable cottages, rigging and scaffolding and a flexible work area. The Australian Government funded the purchase and refurbishment of the MBISC facility, as part of the Educational Investment Fund, with the Centre commencing full operations in January 2011.At the opening, students demonstrated their skills to the Minister and industry guests with their work on a full-scale house frame which will be transported to a Housing NSW site where pre-apprenticeship students will complete its construction.Pre-employment and pre-apprenticeship students gain valuable skills by working on real construction projects. These projects are matched to skill shortage areas and job vacancies and lead to employment or further study options for the students.During the opening ceremony pre-apprentice student, Chanelle Narayan, spoke about her course and the benefits the centre has on the community.“This course provides the youth of today an opportunity to get skills needed to have a career within the building industry, she said.“The best thing about MBISC is that it provides a learning network for the Ingleburn/Macarthur region, where it is hard to find a job these days with little knowledge and no experience. It’s a place that focuses a lot on the community and how our training can help society. The Centre also:Supports flexible delivery options including e-learning and workplace delivery•Supports industry/TAFE partnerships for the critical area of green skills training
