About Us
Uppsala University, founded in 1477, was the first university in Scandinavia. The initiative in this matter came from the Primate of the Catholic Church of Sweden,Archbishop Jakob Ulvsson of Uppsala. The University offers both breadth and depth in its subject areas. With a tradition of research and education stretching back over 500 years, Uppsala University is constantly seeking new approaches. The University's tradition of renewal is one of its strengths. Uppsala University is made up of dynamic and independent disciplines at nine faculties. The faculties support and complement each other. They create conditions for multi-disciplinary research and education.

Institute Details
Library Uppsala University Library is an academic library and is open to all. The task is to meet the scholarly information needs at the University and to participate in the University's research and teaching by providing training in information retrieval and literacy. The Library is continuously developing and adapting its activities to keep in step with technical innovations and the needs of research and teaching. Enormous parts of the Uppsala University Library's collections are digital. The collections are believed to have reached 30,000 volumes. Health care The Student Health Center provides health care for university students in Uppsala and is a complement to the public health care system in Sweden. The following conditions apply for appointments with doctors, nurses, psychologists and counselors: anxiety lack of confidence stress problems with alcohol speech anxiety performance anxiety lack of ability to concentrate crises and relationship problems in connection with the situation as a student sleeplessness lack of appetite, stomach trouble, tiredness neck pains and shoulders pains, headaches problems in connection to examinations and papers allergies or asthma connected to the study environment or future profession Hostel Details There are three types of student housing: Student rooms are usually single rooms in a corridor, area 12–18 m2 and with their own WC and shower, although there are some exceptions. The kitchen is usually shared with other students (4–12) living on the same corridor. Rooms are furnished with a bed and mattress, a desk, chairs and a bookcase. Students must keep their rooms in good order and not damage furniture, etc, since they will be responsible for paying for any damage made. There will usually be an inspection before you leave your room on departure. Male and female students live on the same corridor. There are also rooms in “dublettes� – a sort of twin room arrangement with an appointed room mate. The housing company can sometimes arrange for two people who know each other to share the same room. Flats/apartments with 2–4 rooms, kitchen and bathroom. The flats are principally for families and most often unfurnished, except for larger kitchen appliances. Facts And Figures Undergraduate and Graduate Education Uppsala University offers some 50 programmes for beginners, about 45 master programmes, and close to 2,000 single-subject courses. Every year more than 40,000 undergraduate and graduate students enroll for classes. This corresponds to about 20,000 full-time students. The most sought-after programmes at Uppsala University are dietetics, psychology, human resources, and medicine. Every year some 4,000 undergraduate and graduate degrees are conferred. More than half are in professional fields such as law, psychology, pharmacy, medicine, nursing, engineering, and teaching. Postgraduate Education and Research Postgraduate education includes 2,000 doctoral students. Nearly 400 doctorates and about 100 licentiate degrees are conferred each year. Uppsala University has 6,000 employees. About 4,000 are teachers/researchers. Some 500 full professors, about 20% of them women. Uppsala University has a turnover of about mSEK 4,300. Nearly 70% goes to research and postgraduate education. About 50% of research is funded by external sources. Internationalization Uppsala University offers more than 20 international master programmes and 300 single-subject courses taught in English. Uppsala University has agreements for student exchange with nearly 500 foreign universities in 50 countries. Uppsala University has some 3,000 international research partnerships with more than 1,000 universities throughout the world, primarily in Europe, the U.S., and Asia. Roughly 5,000 academic publications per year, about 50 % articles in international scientific journals. Disability Support A coordinator with specific responsibility for disability issues is available at Uppsala University. Students with disabilities who have enrolled in higher education will according to need receive such forms of support as are directly related to their education. Among the forms of support which may be considered for students with disabilities may be mentioned: note-taking help course literature in alternative formats such as talking books reading help sign language interpreting (Swedish sign language) mentors modification of exams such as extended time for written exams Your Rights Student Working Conditions In the guidelines for Student Working Conditions, sometimes even referred to as the list of student rights, the demands you can make can be about your physical environment, course plans and schedules, student influence and educational instructions, among other things. Discrimination Act and Equal Treatment of Students At Uppsala University no one shall be discriminated against because of gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, religion or other beliefs. This is regulated in the Discrimination Act. The university has also implemented a plan of action for equal treatment of students, The Equal Treatment Plan (only available in Swedish). This plan is founded within the areas of equality, accessibility and diversity. Ombudsman for Grading Issues Any student can turn to a “betygsombudsman� - an ombudsman for grading issues, if they believe that they have received the wrong mark or that the examination has been executed poorly or unfairly. Diversity To create meeting places for students and staff with different ethnic and religious backgrounds is a way to increase creativity in the university environment. This is stated in Uppsala University’s Diversity Plan (only available in Swedish) which both students and staff are obliged to follow. In the plan it is stated, among other contributions, that the university must enhance diversity. The Broader Recruitment Plan (only available in Swedish) is a tool to achieve this goal also. Gender Equality The study environment at UU should be welcoming for both men and women. This is one of the foremost points in the university’s gender equality work. There is also a plan of action for gender equality. Equality in the aspect of Sexual Orientation and Sexual Identity The Equality Plan with regards to sexual orientation and sexual identity for Uppsala University is a lead into making sure the university is a well functioning work and study environment for all employees and students, despite sexual orientation or sexual identity. The Equality Plan describes how the equality work shall be integrated in all functions and at all levels of the university. Accessibility People with disabilities at Uppsala University should be able to work and study with equal opportunities as others. The Accessibility Plan (only available in Swedish) describes what Uppsala University must do to increase physical accessibility in university buildings and classrooms and also improve the reception of persons with disabilities. Study Life with Children Every fifth student is a parent and it is important that the student life can be combined with parenting. Uppsala University has a Parental Policy concerning all employees and students. The plan supports a positive attitude to parenthood and gives guidelines and information to superiors and teachers on how to act toward students and employees with children. Financial Aid Scholarships There are no scholarships awarded by Uppsala University. The majority of international students are financially self-supporting. A limited number of scholarships for master studies are awarded by the Swedish Institute (SI) and not all of the master programmes participate in SI programme. Please note that not all countries are eligible for the scholarships either. Applicants who would like to apply for one of the SI scholarships should include a separate application letter concerning the scholarship with their application to a master programme. Swedish Student Aid The most common way for Swedish students to finance their studies is through Swedish student aid (study allowance and financial student aid). If you are not a Swedish citizen, you can receive financial aid assuming that you have a basic right to it. The National Board of Student Aid (CSN) can award you an entitlement to student aid only if you have moved to Sweden for a purpose other than study. You must also be officially registered as a resident in Sweden and must intend to remain here. Visiting students are expected to finance their studies themselves.
